College Football Week 7: 1-2 Punch
I am issuing an open challenge to the top 10 teams in college football this week: STOP LOSING. If the wild, weird world of college football gets any wilder or weirder I'll take it as a sign of the impending apocalypse.
Seriously, though, how 'bout them Kentucky Wildcats? Isn't that supposed to be a basketball school? UK over LSU in 3 overtimes is, for now, my game of the year. Everything college football is supposed to be: lots of offense, back and forth scoring, and the good guys won. Rich Brooks (former Oregon coach) has always done amazing things with whatever talent he has lying around. That's not to say that Kentucky isn't talented, but they definitely don't have the manpower LSU has.
On the other hand, you have Cal losing to Oregon State. This game was a complete reversal of the Oregon-Cal game from two weeks ago. This time it was the Golden Bears who made all the mistakes down the stretch, and the unpredictable Beavers capitalized. Cal is still the more talented team here. They almost beat the Beavs despite starting a redshirt freshman quarterback. What this game proves more than anything is that the Pac-10 is the toughest conference in the country top to bottom. Actually Stanford 24, USC 23 proved that.
Anywayzzle, the first BCS rankings of the year are out this week:
1. Ohio State
2. South Florida
3. Boston College
4. LSU
5. Oklahoma
6. South Carolina
7. Kentucky
8. Arizona State
9. West Virginia
10. Oregon
I don't pretend to know how the BCS system works and I'm sure these rankings will change over the next couple weeks as a few of these teams play some tougher competition (I'm looking at you Arizona State and Boston College), but this provides me my first opportunity to push for a college football playoff. Seriously, the BCS system is flawed, especially in a year like this where there is no consensus number one team, and where upsets have been the norm. Let's turn the bowl games into playoff games, and crown a real number one team at the end of the season.
