Nix Pix NFL Week Twelve

Week Twelve
Last Week: 1-2-0 (HELP!)
Season 14-13-3

After a great vacation everything is quickly falling part. It was bad enough watching former Oregon QBs ruin the National Football League on Thanksgiving. Now I’ve lost four out of six in the last two weeks. Today if you tuned in we had another unsuccessful call-in show where our only callers were the usual Nuts and Sunday it is going to blow 70mph so the power might go off during the games. Add to that I may not see Seattle again until September 2008 and there is gloom stacked upon doom like the Rockies and a broom. Even bubble bath can’t cure this low time.

Houston +3 @ Cleveland
To Browns fans, the end of the world is actually an annual event called football season however there seems to be hope in Ohio in 2007. But hope is fading faster than the memory of Earl Campbell in Houston. I wish they’d trade Johnson to New York (N) so he could be called Andre the Giant. That would make me smile but only for a second. (emo music in background).

Nick’s Pick: BROWNS

Washington +3 @ Tampa Bay
While the cool kids will be all up on Dallas-Green Bay, the never-get-to-fall-in-love types will be glued to this match-up of teams that just aren’t nice to look at but getting it done. The Skins seems to face stiffer competition in the East and I think that gives them an advantage over Joey Galloway. Didn’t like him as a Seahawk, hated him on Friends.

Nick’s Pick: REDSKINS

New Orleans -2 @ Carolina
Really? The Panthers don’t even have a QB. When Pfeffer is making wooden teeth jokes about yer best option it might be time to call it a season. Good one, Mike. Wait, I have a better idea....

Winnipeg vs. Saskatchewan +11
The Grey Cup, named after my second favorite tea, is Sunday and as a lifelong Bluebombers fan as of a few minutes ago I’m going with the underdogs to knock off the pesky Roughriders, eh.

Nick’s Pick: BLUEBOMBERS

College Football Week 12: Seeing Red

Alright. So, I think I've fully recovered from last Thursday when the worst possible thing happened to my team (hold on, let me punch myself in the nose one more time... there, that's better). We talked about it a little bit on the round table Saturday so I won't go into details. Oregon loses Dixon (and his Heisman Trophy hopes), and there goes the season. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

Anyway, it was a pretty good week for teams in red to upset top 10 competition. Not only did the Ducks lose to Wildcats, leading to a flood of red T-shirt sporting coeds rushing the field in the Arizona desert, but number 4 Oklahoma took a dive to the Texas Tech Red Raiders. I don't know what it all means, but it can't be good. My hope now is that Oregon can win its final two games (on the road against UCLA and at home versus the Beavs), and that Arizona State will lose one of its last two, so the Ducks can still go to the Rose Bowl. I would be happy with that, considering they were picked to finish in the middle of the Pac-10 and go to another Las Vegas Bowl this season.

The big news in college football this week, though, came today when Michigan coach Lloyd Carr announced his retirement. That means from now until January everyone and their brother will be wondering if LSU coach Les Miles (Michigan class of '76) will leave the Tigers to take over at the Big House next year. Right now Miles is keeping predictably mum on the topic, but it is adding one more wrinkle to this already crazy college football season.

I think if Miles wins a national championship he'll be more likely to stay in Baton Rouge. However, if the Tigers go to the title game and lose, he'll be inclined to take off for Michigan. Food for thought. What do you think? Maybe Michigan should hire Charlie Weis, then Oregon can beat them 49-0 next time they play.

Nix Pix NFL Week Eleven

Week Eleven
Last Week: 1-2-0 (blame Kitna)
Season 13-11-3
.
Well I'm in Seattle again and was able to trick the football gods last week into a Seahawks shut-out victory over a really bad team. I spent much of Thursday at what used to be called Fish Expo checking out the latest in an industry that I barely participate in but most of us touch everyday one way or another. There will be more detail on my own blog (El Sandinista link) about my adventures down her next week. For now I'm just trying to get this done so I don't miss Nix Pix like I did a few weeks ago when I was down here. I was distracted by the large numbers of the female species so it wasn't my fault.
.
Arizona +3 @ Cincinnati
I find it hard to believe the Bengals have fallen off so hard. The Cards aren't much of a road team either. I'm in a hurry. There are hotties everywhere.
.
Nick's Pick: BENGALS
.
.
Pittsburgh -9.5 @ New York (A)
EVERYWHERE!
.
Nick's Pick: STEELERS
.
.
MNF: Tennessee @ Denver -2
There are so many beatiful women in Seattle I'm not coming back. Casey can have JOTR since he can't have a BCS Championship. Tell my mom Hi and tell Alaska 1 to put the Alderwood Penthouse on the market.

Nick's Pick: BRONC-HOES

College Football Week 11: Down To The Nitty Gritty

Sorry y'all, for taking the last couple weeks off. I've got a ton of excuses but I won't lay 'em on ya right now, mostly because you probably don't care.

Anyhow, as the title suggests we are now down to the nitty gritty time in the college football season. Ohio State loses its first game leaving only Kansas and Hawaii as unbeaten. Lets put Hawaii aside for a moment, because even if they finish perfect it's unlikely they'll be playing for the national championship. Kansas, on the other hand, could conceivably be playing in New Orleans on January 7. The Jayhawks have Iowa State and Missouri still left on their schedule. If they win both those games they play in the Big 12 Championship game, probably against Oklahoma. Beat Oklahoma and I don't see how you can keep them out of the national championship. No undefeated team has ever been left out in favor of a one-loss team, and even with all the flaws of the BCS system it won't happen this year either.

For now, though, LSU and Oregon are 1-2 in the BCS. Why? you ask... Well, first of all, both teams have played tougher competition than Kansas. If you look at who the Jayhawks have played, it's pretty much all mediocre teams (Sorry Pfeffer, I know they played Nebraska). Missouri will be their biggest test and that's not saying much. LSU and Oregon, however, have both played top ranked competition at least three times this season, and the middles of their schedules have included teams that would've beaten Kansas easily.

Now, let me add a disclaimer here... I'm not exactly an impartial observer. As a crazy Duck fan I have my biases. But I'm trying to look at this impartially. And that leads to my next question: Who is the better team, LSU or Oregon? That's a tough one, but I'm going to give it to LSU by a nose. Their strength of schedule has been slightly tougher than Oregon's. Slightly. However, I will say that my Ducks have been more impressive in winning games than LSU. The Tigers have barely won some of their games, while Oregon goes out and punches the other team in the mouth week after week.

LSU and Oregon both have three games left on their schedule. For the Ducks it's Arizona, UCLA and Oregon State. Meanwhile, LSU has Mississippi, Arkansas, and whoever they play in the SEC Championship Game. So neither team has a real cake walk from here on out. A word of advice for both: watch out for Kansas.

As for Hawaii, yes they are undefeated and could finish the season that way. Does that mean they should play for the national championship? No. They've played an even weaker schedule than Kansas and even if they make it to a BCS bowl game they'll be crushed by whoever they play. But what about Boise State last year? Same conference as Hawaii and they beat Oklahoma. True, but Hawaii's not Boise State last year. In fact, I'd be surprised if they make it past Washington, who they play in the last game of the season.

Besides, if Hawaii does go undefeated it gives us another reason to lobby for a playoff, which should be the way this is all settled anyway.

Nix Pix NFL Week Ten

Week Ten
Last Week: 2-1-0
Season: 12-9-3

Still here, didn’t kill myself after the Cleveland game. Didn't even punch myself in the face. Serious. Anyway, I’ve been going through what can best be called “subject block“. It is like writer’s block but I can still come up with the words, just not anything worth writing about. I think it is from listening to Unplugged so much which is beginning to have a similar problem. Everything has been complained about. Of course don’t tell Don Shula. The holidays are coming, I’m about to fly to Seattle, the Rams are 0-8, life is good. That sucks when you are a pessimistic blogger with a god complex. I can’t write happy, I just can’t. Feel the segway....

Detroit @ Arizona -1

This should be interesting as the two most God fearing Christian QB’s in the NFL, Jon Kitna and Kurt Warner, face off to see who the higher powers like more. There will be enough fingers pointed sunward to jab a hole in the retractable roof at University of Phoenix Stadium. I have a theory that God likes the Lions this year and that they will in fact make it back to the same field as this game but in February. Kitna will again announce He Almighty has got his back for the two weeks before the game, the media will eat it up, Jim Gray will ask if Tom Brady is Satan, and in the end the Patriots will win 44-7. But for now…

Nick’s Pick: LIONS

St. Louis @ New Orleans -11

The Saints have got back on track in recent weeks but I’m not so sure they are eleven points better than even a winless team. The Lambs are bound to accidentally win a game soon and this could be the week. Insert sheep joke here.

Nick’s Pick: RAMS

San Francisco @ Seattle -10

My guest The Clarkston claims to be a Seahawks fan but wears 49ers garb all the time. Why? He liked Montana. We’ve battled on this issue ever since he took the corner desk at the Mirror. I’m more of a Wyoming guy myself. Now I’ve taken my Hawks on here a couple times recently and it backfired so I’m taking a page from Mr. Teed Off and taking the underdog in an attempt to induce reverse karma (not to be confused with the tricks women use to get me to stop talking to them, that's called reverse psychology). I fully expect to lose this pick and get two out of three for a second straight week.

Nick’s Pick: 49ERS (Go Seahawks)

Get some $2 a slice pizza, a cold one, hang out with the locals, and listen to the 67,000 loudest people on the planet. GO SEAHAWKS!

JOTR Guest for November 10th, 2007

Nix Pix NFL Week Nine

Week Nine
Last Week: 3-0-0 (dingdingdingdingdingdingdingding)
Season: 10-8-3

Before I start I have to apologize for talking about Ashley Olsen’s testicle(s) on the show today. Being molested by Lance Armstrong is bad enough without me bringing up her anatomy and for that I am sorry.

After Pizza Chris, Big Carrot and I celebrated Nelly’s 33rd birthday last night with some bubbly I started to recall my hip hop days before I crossed over into modeling underwear around the globe. I still have enough rap cassettes to fill a bait tub but tapes have no place in this digital world. Anywho, for Nix Pix today I’m going to decode the Wu Tang Clan names of key NFL players in my match-ups and use them to win another three games.

New England -5.5 @ Indianapolis
Yes, I said it on the air and I’ll say it again. I’m taking the Patriots by 10. Tom Brady, known to the Shaolin Monks as Tha Lonely Donkey Kong, has made monkeys out for the competition. They have been waiting all off season and half of this one for this AFC Championship rematch. Indy’s Manning to Wayne (Victorian Cow to Illegitimate Muslim Fundamentalist) will have trouble inside the eleven chambers of the Pats defense.

Nick’s Pick: PATRIOTS

Dallas -3 @ Philadelphia
The Cowboys had a bye week and before that lost to the Tha Lonely Donkey Kong so Vegas has already forgotten how dominating they’ve been this season. Tony Romo, or Erratic Assassin as he’s known on the streets, will destroy the Eagles like Bruce Lee taking out mannequins in JC Penney. Erratic? More like pinpoint. Maybe that contract extension will get to his head. Cash Rules Everything Around Me. Somehow I don’t think the name generator is 100% Wu accurate. In case you wondered, Dubious Masturbatah-X is T.O. Clifford Kay is Sheepish Lord of Chaos. My Streams of Wu-ness style is almost unreadable to the untrained eye but my skillz are undeniable and fresh.

Nick’s Pick: COWBOYS

Green Bay @ Kansas City -2.5
Temporary Spastic (LJ) is on my fantasy team but his team has done little to impress me. The old master Brett Favre is in full black belt mode right now and I wouldn’t want to cross paths with the Packers. OMG! Favre and Romo have the EXACT SAME WU NAME! It is 100%. Protect ya neck.

Nick’s Pick: PACKERS
